20 Things I Learned By 20

It’s my 20th birthday today! In celebration of that, I wanted to get a little more personal with all my readers and share what I’ve learned over the past two decades. In life I have realized that some lessons are easy and some are a constant uphill battle. I hope that you can relate to some of these and even come up with a list of your own. You’d be surprised how many valuable lessons you’ve learned through the years; here are a few of mine…

  1. Outgrowing friendships happens, sometimes people grow in a way that doesn’t fit you anymore. That doesn’t mean you or the other person did anything wrong.
  2. You will get over the one person you never thought you would.
  3. If you love someone whether that be a friend, significant other, family, etc, you should always tell them.
  4. Always make time for yourself. Bringing yourself on dates is very liberating.
  5. As challenging as it can be at times, always give someone the benefit of the doubt.
  6. Never feel bad if you enjoy things that are different than your friends. That’s what makes you special.
  7. Never underestimate the power of “please” or “thank you”.
  8. Needing help doesn’t make you any less capable of a person.
  9. Life rarely works in the way you planned for, most of the time it works out in your favor even if you don’t see it now. Hindsight in 20/20.
  10. Failure is a part of life; everyone fails at some point.
  11. Hurt is inevitable; opening up can be scary but it’s worth it every time.
  12. It’s okay to say “no”. You live for you and only you.
  13. The best friendships are the ones where you can go weeks without talking and pick up right where you left off. Life gets busier as you get older, but knowing you have someone a phone call away is comforting.
  14. Be nice to everyone! Not only does it make you feel good inside but it can change someone’s day.
  15. Success is defined differently to everyone.
  16. Even the people who look like they have their shit together, don’t. Growing up isn’t easy for anyone.
  17. Make time for your family because when you get older it may not be as easy to visit.
  18. Do something everyday that makes you feel good. Whether that be watching your new favorite Netflix series, grabbing your favorite coffee, or talking to your sister; the little things bring more positivity to your everyday life.
  19. You are not selfish for standing up for yourself and your needs.
  20. Lastly, and this is one that I work on constantly; who you are is enough. There are no “ands, “ifs”, or “buts”. You are you and that is everything.

Thank you for reading! Here’s to many more lessons learned and many more years of living life to the fullest.
